why is he persecuted? :((

The Rocket Man

I want to give Robert H. Goddard a hug because his life is actually probably my worst nightmare. Going unrecognized, let alone ridiculed, for one’s life work only to be redeemed when you are dead and it is entirely too late? Why is he persecuted?

A short biography summarized from the description of the Zenpencils post: Goddard was only seventeen when he decided that he would spend the rest of his life reaching for the stars– literally. His studies — of physics, of engineering, of aerodynamics– culminated in a 1919 paper that claimed that rocket technology could be used to explore space, a bold proclamation at that time.

Scientists were disdainful; journalists, gleefully cruel. For the rest of his life, he shied away from his critics and continued his work as a recluse. And he died as such; a recluse, unrecognized and unappreciated for his unconditional devotion.

But guess who looks dumb now that we’ve spewed our trash all over space and planted a flag on the moon? 🙂

  1. Sounds about right. One perspective on this, though, is that there enough ideas out there that the few that work are insignificant compared the the sheer number of wild ideas that don’t work. What crazy idea do you think is next?
